Sleepy Creek residents can get help with septic pumping
|

Is it time for your septic to be pumped? Do you live in the Sleepy Creek watershed?
If you answered yes to both of these questions, you are eligible for a voucher to help cover your costs.
Through the Chesapeake Bay Program and the West Virginia Tributary Strategy Implementation Committee, the West Virginia Conservation Agency and the Eastern Panhandle Conservation District are offering this special funding opportunity to the residents within the Sleepy Creek drainage. This area has been identified as a region of concern with surface water quality conditions, specifically related to fecal coliform bacteria.
When septic systems are properly designed, constructed and maintained, they effectively reduce or eliminate most human health or environmental threats posed by pollutants in household wastewater. However, they require regular maintenance or they can fail.
Septic systems need to be monitored to ensure that they work properly throughout their service lives. By maintaining your system, you are potentially saving money by avoiding problems down the road and protecting water resources.
The West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources suggests you have your septic system inspected at least every three years by a professional and your tank pumped as recommended by the inspector (generally every three to five years).
Qualifying homeowners are eligible for a one-time $150 reimbursement voucher to assist in covering the cost of tank pumping. If you require assistance in determining if you are within the watershed boundaries, staff will be available to assist you. Funding for this project will be on a first come, first served basis.
